AMLI Residential

Gregory T. Mutz is the Co-Founder, Chairman, and CEO of AMLI Residential, a Chicago-based real estate company.

Under Mutz’s leadership, AMLI Residential (which was created when the original AMLI Realty Co. was restructured into two separate divisions) has developed and managed luxury apartment properties totaling 28,000 units in nine major U.S. markets.

Launched in 1980 as AMLI Realty Co., the company was restructured in 1993 into two separate entities: AMLI Residential and AMLI Commercial Properties. AMLI Residential became a publicly traded company in 1994 and was later acquired by Morgan Stanley Real Estate’s PRIME Property Fund in 2006.

Mutz is a cyclist and triathlete who established the Jeannie Simmons Mutz Memorial Endowed Scholarship at DePauw University in honor of his late wife. In 2025, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from ConnectCRE, which honored his real estate industry contributions.

Mutz earned his undergraduate degree from DePauw University and a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School. He also served as an infantry lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

These are some of the reasons why Gregory Mutz was selected to receive ApartmentBuildings.com’s first annual AB 100 Owner/Investor of the Year Award, which recognizes those who demonstrate creativity, skill and success in the multifamily industry.
