Benesch’s Laura Mehl Sugarman Structures Transactions Totaling Billions of Dollars

Company:

Benesch

Benesch Partner Laura Sugarman structures and closes deals for transformative projects in New York and across the nation. Sugarman has developed particular expertise in leasehold condominium structures that help nonprofit organizations, including hospitals, charter schools and community health organizations, secure essential property tax exemptions.

Representative transactions include advising an alternative asset management firm on its acquisition of 228 mortgage loans for approximately $2 billion, representing a family office in acquiring and financing a Texas multifamily portfolio that involved assuming more than $100 million in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans, and assisting an international investment firm with more than $600 million in distressed loan purchases and subsequent foreclosures involving more than 70 California properties.

Sugarman co-chairs Benesch’s hiring committee, participates in the firm’s Women’s Initiative Network and mentors law students and junior attorneys. She serves on Yeshiva University’s Real Estate Advisory Board and mentors students through Cardozo Law School’s Women in Law Institute.

Her honors include recognition as a Crain’s New York Notable Woman in Law and as a Lawdragon 500 Leading Lawyer in America.

These are just a few reasons Laura Mehl Sugarman is among the New York & Tri-State Connect CRE 2026 Women in Real Estate Award winners. The award honors the achievements and inspirational stories of women who have reached respected leadership positions and taken on mentorship roles.
