Model/Z Brings a Manufacturing Mindset to Multifamily Construction
Model/Z is applying advanced manufacturing techniques to help build multifamily housing faster and more predictably.
An outgrowth of founder and CEO Martin Muto’s SoLa Impact, the company’s modular construction system uses standardized structural steel modules that are manufactured off-site. There, they are wired, plumbed and finished before being transported to the development site. Once there, the modules are rapidly assembled into multifamily buildings.
Model/Z’s competitive advantage lies in treating multifamily construction as a manufacturing process. The company uses proprietary software and automated production processes to standardize designs and streamline fabrication, drawing on expertise from the automotive and aerospace industries.
By shifting much of construction from the jobsite to a controlled manufacturing environment, Model/Z is seeking to reduce construction variability while improving speed, quality control and material efficiency.
The approach also addresses different housing needs. Model/Z’s system can accommodate studios and larger family units, as well as multifamily buildings, affordable housing, student housing, hotels and other specialized facilities. Its steel chassis system is designed for structures ranging from mid-rise buildings to taller developments, depending on the chosen construction system.
These are some of the reasons why Model/Z was selected to receive ApartmentBuildings.com’s AB 100 Innovators of the Year Award, which recognizes those who demonstrate creativity, skill and success in the multifamily industry.
