As an associate within Akerman’s Real Estate Practice Group, Christopher Penelas is involved with South Florida land use, zoning, and government relations. He assists developers and landowners seeking land use entitlements for developments, including procurement processes with cities and counties, and production requests. He regularly represents clients before local governments and county boards.
Penelas worked with the Akerman team to represent a client in its leasehold interest sale of the Jungle Island development. He assisted in preparing a ballot question to authorize the redevelopment project. He also worked with the team to successfully propose a code modification for the Terminal Island Parking Garage expansion.
Within Akerman, Penelas is part of the Hispanic and Latino Bridge Network and oversees the South Florida Land Use team’s local political engagement efforts.
He is a long-time community volunteer who assists local political candidates. He has worked on campaigns for current Miami Mayor Francis Suarez and Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez.
