Preston Brooks
Served as environmental counsel on Rexford Realty’s $1-billion Blackstone portfolio buy
Represented the city of Lynwood in its $215-million development of a grocery store
Preston Brooks is one of California’s leading environmental lawyers and chaired Cox Castle’s Environmental team for nearly 20 years. He represents property owners, developers, pension funds, lenders, and municipalities to craft environmental risk management strategies for real estate acquisition, financing, and development.
Brooks also represents brownfield purchasers interested in redeveloping properties into more productive uses. He negotiates with federal and state government agencies to help minimize environmental liabilities, using tools such as the California Land Reuse and Revitalization Act and Prospective Purchaser Agreements.
Recent work includes representing Rexford Realty on environmental issues in its $1-billion, three-million-square-foot portfolio buy from Blackstone Real Estate. Brooks also represented the city of Lynwood (California) on the $215-million clean-up and development of a grocery store in an economically disadvantaged neighborhood.
Brooks is a member of the Brownfield Collaborative, co-chair of the United Friends of the Children board and on the board of Green Wish. He has written many articles on environmental issues, such as brownfield redevelopment, mold, green building, OSHA asbestos standards and environmental insurance.
This is why Preston Brooks received Connect CRE’s 2024 California Lawyers in Real Estate Award. The award celebrates real estate attorneys who have distinguished themselves in their practice and the larger community.
