Represents borrowers and lenders involved with complex commercial real estate financing
Dedicated pro bono advocate; commits many hours annually to those in need
Sheila Kailus’ background combines 15 years as in-house counsel for commercial real estate companies with her more recent role as a partner in private practice with Jenner & Block. This has given her a unique insight, which helps provide creative legal and business solutions to her clients. Since joining Jenner & Block in 2018, Kailus has advised clients on acquisitions, dispositions, financing, leasing and development of commercial real estate.
Kailus also represents both borrowers and lenders in connection with complex financings involving commercial real estate, including her representation of a national grocery chain owner in connection with a term loan secured by its ownership in over 200 properties.
Kailus’ willingness to immerse herself in her clients’ businesses to help them accomplish their goals distinguishes her from peers at other firms. For example, she represents a family office that owns a mixed-use property in Texas. At least once a month, she travels to Texas to ensure that all leasing and operations issues are addressed. During the pandemic, she aided clients and prospective clients, especially as their commercial properties were severely impacted.
She is a dedicated pro bono advocate who commits many hours each year to providing legal services at no cost to those in need. During the pandemic, Kailus represented Housing Forward in leasing the Write Inn Hotel in Oak Park, Illinois to temporarily house the nonprofit organization’s homeless clients. She recently represented the United Way in connection with a new headquarters lease in Chicago’s Merchandise Mart.
For several years, she has provided pro bono representation to a woman seeking asylum in the United States after the woman fled from gang violence in Guatemala. Kailus also supports applicants to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
Kailus spends time mentoring new lawyers. In 2020, the firm recognized her with its Jenner & Block Mentorship Award.
These are just a few of the reasons we chose Sheila Kailus as one of the Chicago & Midwest’s 2022 Women in Real Estate Award winners. Connect CRE’s Women in Real Estate Awards honor the achievements and inspirational stories of women who have reached respected positions of leadership and play key mentorship roles for others.
