Katherine C. Bissett
Served as counsel on 30 financing originating transactions totaling $1.5 billion in 2021
Specializes in representing lenders and borrowers of real estate commercial loans
Experience includes acquisition, bridge, construction, ground lease and mezzanine financing
Cox, Castle & Nicholson partner Katherine C. Bissett is a commercial finance attorney on the company’s Capital Markets Team. She specializes in representing lenders and borrowers in connection with commercial loans secured directly or indirectly by real estate. During 2021, Bissett served as counsel for both lenders and borrowers on well over 30 financing origination transactions, in more than 12 states, valued in the aggregate of over $1.5 billion.
Bissett’s experience crosses a wide range of financing transactions, including acquisition, bridge and construction financing, ground lease financing and mezzanine loans, as well as secondary market transactions. She maintains a practical deal-making approach, using her experience with asset management work, including loan modifications, assumptions, collateral substitutions, restructures and work outs, to add valuable perspective that takes into account the entire life of a loan.
She regularly handles transactions throughout the United States, and her experience spans a broad spectrum of property types, including undeveloped land, hotel/resort, retail, commercial, and multifamily and mixed-use projects.
An admitted deal junkie, she enjoys diving into the most unusual and complex of projects. Her favorite part of any loan transaction is (maybe surprisingly) drafting loan documents. She views each set of loan documents as a complex puzzle which, when done well, weaves all the various oddities and nuances of the deal together into a functional roadmap for the life of the loan.
Bissett began her career at Cox, Castle & Nicholson as a summer associate in 2010, joining the Capital Markets practice team as a first-year associate in January 2012. Her superior legal counsel, significant business accomplishments, talent, dedication and passion led her to become Partner in 2021. She is an invaluable asset to both her clients and the firm, helping grow the practice and taking an active role in training and mentoring the next generation of finance associates.
These are just a few reasons we chose Bissett as one of California’s 2022 Next Generation Award winners. Connect Media’s sixth annual Next Generation Awards recognize young leaders in the commercial real estate industry who are likely to be influential for years to come.
