Newmark’s Joseph Smolen and Geoff Boler Advise on Over $135 Billion in Multifamily Deals
Joseph Smolen and Geoff Boler, executive vice chairmen at Newmark, bring more than $135 billion in combined multifamily transaction experience to the firm’s investment sales platform.
Both specialize in complex institutional transactions, including portfolio sales, recapitalizations, joint ventures and strategic dispositions.
Smolen has 20 years of real estate experience and has handled more than $100 billion in multifamily transactions, including single-asset and large portfolio sales. Boler has nearly two decades in the industry, completing over $35 billion in transaction volume.
Their transaction history includes the $925-million sale of Westlake Village Apartments in the Bay Area, as well as major transactions involving Kiara in Seattle, Kapilina Apartments on Oahu and Park 12 in San Diego. Newmark said Smolen, Boler and two other incoming advisors had been responsible for more than 90% of Western U.S. multifamily sales of $300 million or more within the past seven years.
The pair joined Newmark in 2025 from Eastdil Secured and assumed leadership roles within Newmark’s multifamily business and Multifamily Advisory Council. Before Eastdil, Smolen was a founding member of Institutional Property Advisors and led multifamily advisory work across Southern California.
Smolen is a member of ULI and NMHC and has degrees from Harvard and INSEAD. Boler is a CFA charterholder and earned a business administration degree from the University of Arizona.
These are some of the reasons why Joseph Smolen and Geoff Boler were selected to receive ApartmentBuildings.com’s AB 100 Dealmaker of the Year Award, which recognizes those who demonstrate creativity, skill and success in the multifamily industry.
