Mitchell Morgan Grows Company into a Multifamily Giant

Company:

Morgan Properties

Mitchell Morgan founded Morgan Properties in 1985 after working as an accountant and attending Temple University’s law school at night. He never practiced law. Instead, he moved into multifamily as a CFO before striking out on his own to acquire and operate apartment communities.

Today, the company owns and manages more than 110,000 units across more than 400 communities in 22 states. The company ranked third among the nation’s top multifamily property owners in 2025, with a portfolio valued at nearly $19 billion.

Morgan also expanded the business beyond traditional multifamily ownership. Under the broader Morgan Properties platform, the company has invested in CMBS, whole loans and preferred equity. In 2025, it surpassed 100,000 units following a $501-million acquisition of 11 Midwestern properties, and later that year, it completed a $354-million acquisition of Dream Residential REIT.

In February 2026, Morgan stepped down as CEO and became chairman, handing the CEO role to his sons, Jonathan and Jason Morgan. The transition formalized a succession process that had been years in the making.

These are some of the reasons why Mitchell Morgan was selected to receive ApartmentBuildings.com’s AB 100 Investor/Owner of the Year Award, which recognizes those who demonstrate creativity, skill and success in the multifamily industry.
