Thomas Toomey Oversees UDR’s Holdings of Over 60,000 Apartments
Thomas W. Toomey has spent more than two decades at the helm of UDR, helping turn the multifamily REIT into one of the country’s largest apartment owners.
Toomey joined UDR in 2001 as CEO and remains chairman and chief executive officer. During his tenure, UDR has acquired and disposed of approximately $24 billion of multifamily communities, developing over $5 billion more.
As of June 30, 2026, the company owned or held an ownership interest in 60,259 apartment homes across select U.S. markets.
Toomey brought substantial multifamily experience to UDR. Before joining the company, he had senior positions at AIMCO, including chief operating officer and chief financial officer. During his tenure, he helped oversee a dramatic expansion of the company’s portfolio, which grew tenfold, making AIMCO the largest apartment owner in the country at the time.
Beyond UDR, Toomey has been active in the industry’s leadership organizations. He is a trustee and former global chair of the Urban Land Institute, chairs the ULI Foundation and serves in leadership roles with the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts and National Multifamily Housing Council.
These are some of the reasons why Thomas Toomey was selected to receive ApartmentBuildings.com’s AB 100 Investor/Owner of the Year Award, which recognizes those who demonstrate creativity, skill and success in the multifamily industry.to go here
