Structured the first syndicated DST program offering

With team, pioneered DST/UPREIT and other tax-efficient structures

Steve Meier is a partner and Chair Emeritus at Seyfarth Shaw. He is co-chair of Seyfarth’s Tax practice and leads Seyfarth’s DST and Opportunity Zone Funds practices. He integrates tax law with real estate capital markets and fund formation, helping clients structure investments that comply with federal regulations and deliver long-term value.

During his tenure as chair, Meier guided the department through expansion in areas such as real estate investment funds, implemented a national staffing model to enhance efficiency and collaboration, and played a key role in recruiting several partners who have become influential firm leaders.

He has been active in the DST industry since the issuance of Revenue Ruling 2004-86. He structured the first syndicated DST program offering under that ruling in December 2004.

Meier and his team have implemented and resolved hundreds of DST programs across the nation. The team also pioneered advanced DST/UPREIT and other tax-efficient structures, as well as Opportunity Zone Fund frameworks to maximize tax advantages for real estate investors and developers.

He has been featured in Law360, discussing potential tax changes under the Trump administration and implications for investors and developers. He regularly speaks at industry events.

These are some of the reasons why Steve Meier received Connect CRE’s 2025 Chicago & Midwest Lawyers in Real Estate Award. The award celebrates real estate attorneys who have distinguished themselves in their practice and the larger community.
