As partner and chair of Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr’s real estate practice group, Douglas Burton is a well-regarded real estate lawyer with over two decades of experience in private equity investment and joint ventures, development, acquisitions, dispositions, leasing and financing. His clients include real estate investment trusts, top pension fund advisors, Fortune 50 corporations, developers and nonprofit institutions.
Transactions include representation of a joint venture in acquiring a San Francisco trophy office tower for more than a quarter-billion dollars of an investment adviser and owner of the portfolio sale of 12 licensed facilities for $300 million and of a national quick-service restaurant company in its northeast market expansion.
Burton has been named a Go-To Commercial Real Estate Lawyer by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly, honored as one of Boston Magazine’s Top Lawyers and selected as that magazine’s “New England Super Lawyer Rising Star.” He has been recognized by The Best Lawyers in America, The Legal 500 United States and Chambers USA.
Burton is the past president of his alumni class at Amherst College and a past member of the board of directors of the Mountain View Association. He is a frequent lecturer and guest lecturer at the MIT Center for Real Estate and is a regular guest lecturer at Columbia University’s MSRED Program.
Burton is a member of the Pension Real Estate Association, Urban Land Institute, and the International Council of Shopping Centers. He is also a member of the American Bar Association, New York State Bar Association, Massachusetts Bar Association and Boston Bar Association.
He received his J.D. from Cornell Law School.
