As retail leasing manager for Birmingham, AL-based Bayer Properties, DeeDee Shashy is a leader in the retail space, overseeing leasing efforts for 10 properties across the southeastern portion of Bayer’s 10-million-plus-square-foot portfolio. In her role, Shashy identifies and secures prospective tenants for a mix of lifestyle centers, historic redevelopments, neighborhood and grocery-anchored centers.
A 2010 graduate of the University of Alabama, Shashy rejoined Bayer in 2016 after a prior two-year stint with the company. Since rejoining Bayer, Shashy has been instrumental in adding a number of new tenants. In 2020, Shashy was the top leasing producer for Bayer, completing 43 total deals, while also becoming a first-time mother during a global pandemic.
Shashy has also played a key role in maintaining Bayer’s steady leasing momentum since January 2021. Over the past three months alone, the company’s leasing team has signed 11 new leases and celebrated the opening of 13 stores. Additionally, Shashy gained her CCIM designation in 2018 and is a licensed broker in the states of Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee.

Outside of her work with Bayer, Shashy is highly active within various industry-related organizations. Since 2019, she has served on the Alabama CCIM Board of Directors as the chapter member services and communications chair. For three years, Shashy served as a retail liaison for the Junior League of Birmingham’s Shop, Save and Share Committee, an initiative that seeks to benefit both businesses and the community by encouraging customers and members to shop with certain retail partners to raise funds for the Birmingham community.
Paul Bubny serves as Senior Content Director for Connect Commercial Real Estate, a role to which he brings 13-plus years’ experience covering the commercial real estate industry and 30-plus years in business-to-business journalism. In this capacity, he oversees daily operations while also reporting on both local/regional markets and national trends, covering individual transactions across all property types, as well as delving into broader subject matter. He produces 15-20 daily news stories per day and works with the Connect team and clients to develop longer-form content, ranging from Q&As to thought-leadership pieces.
Prior to joining Connect, Paul was Managing Editor for both Real Estate Forum and GlobeSt.com at American Lawyer Media, where he oversaw operations at both publications while also producing daily news and feature-length articles. His tenure in B2B publishing stretches back into the print era, and he has served as Editor in Chief on four national trade publications.
Since 1999, Paul has volunteered as the newsletter editor of passenger rail advocacy groups (one national, one local).
