Chicago Sees Surge in DT Activity for St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations

Downtown Chicago saw a boost in traffic as the city hosted its annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration with the traditional dyeing of the Chicago River.

Thousands of locals and tourists turned out to watch the parades and gather along the Chicago River to see the Chicago Plumbers Union boats turn the water green. Chicago saw a 226.5% rise in pedestrian traffic year over year and a 140.5% rise week over week. In 2023, Illinois reported a record year of tourism, and recent events like the NASCAR Street Race, Lollapoolza and various community events have boosted revenue in Chicago and beyond.

“These statistics show how important holiday celebrations and events are in driving visitors to downtowns,” says Cederick Johnson, senior director at MRI Software. “They bode well for Easter parades, July 4th, and other holidays, and demonstrate a return on investment for cities and retailers that plan and host special events.”
