Why is Your Flight Delayed? (Hint: It’s Not What You Think)
You’re sitting in an airport, at your gate, waiting to board your airplane. A moment later, a friendly voice pops up over the PA, informing you that the flight has been delayed, sorry for the inconvenience, and so on.
Weather? Mechanical failure? Possibly. It could also be a technology glitch. The number of such glitches has increased, which, in turn, caused flight delays or cancellations, according to Itabhi’s Robert Charette. “We’ve been seeing one a month for a while, and lately it’s been two or three a month,” he told Crain’s Chicago Business.
The issue has caught the attention of Congress, with U.S. Senators Ed Markey (MA) and Richard Blumenthal (CT) sending letters to United Airlines and Delta Airlines about the issue. In the meantime, Charette’s advice is to pay attention. “When I read there’s an IT upgrade or implementation going on, I stay away from that carrier for weeks,” he said.
