Where are Best Places to Get a Summer Job?

National  + Weekender  |

This summer’s job market is likely going to be challenged by the tight U.S. labor market. The national unemployment rate is holding steady at a 50-year low and wage growth is finally starting to inch up a bit.

Personal finance website WalletHub took an in-depth look at 2019’s Best Places for Summer Jobs in an effort to help job seekers find the best summer employment opportunities. WalletHub’s analysts compared more than 180 markets in the U.S. across 21 key metrics (see the top 50 below). The data set ranges from availability of summer jobs, to median income of part-time workers, to median rental price.

What researchers found was that where candidates look for a job will matter almost as much as the job function. Obviously, opportunities will be more widely available in some places than in others. And while a job may pay well in one city, the same position may not pay as much in another. Minimum-wage laws and local costs, for instance, will determine earnings and consequently what workers will be able to afford in terms of housing, transportation and social activities. More importantly, for those supporting themselves, location will dictate how much income they’ll be able to save if that’s the goal.

Best vs. Worst

South Burlington, VT has the most part-time job openings per 1,000 people aged 16 to 24 in the labor force, 183.97, which is 27.5 times higher than in North Las Vegas, the city with the fewest at 6.69.

Scottsdale, AZ has the highest median income for part-time workers (adjusted for cost of living), $25,359, which is 3.6 times higher than in New York, the city with the lowest at $6,986.

Portland, ME has the highest labor-force participation rate of people aged 16 to 24, 77.66%, which is two times higher than in Irvine, CA, the city with the lowest at 38.58%.

Bismarck, ND has the lowest unemployment rate for people aged 16 to 24, 2.69%, which is 12.5 times lower than in Detroit, the city with the highest at 33.53%.

South Burlington, VT also has the lowest share of people aged 16 to 24 living in poverty, 7.87%, which is 6.8 times lower than in Tallahassee, FL the city with the highest at 53.40%.
