When is Big Too Big When it Comes to Towers?
Vancouver, British Columbia may soon get a facelift. Vancouver’s City Council approved a new development at the intersection of Nelson and Burrad, a 57-story tower which is a partnership between the First Baptist Church of Vancouver and Westbank Project Corp.
The tower, designed by the late Bing Thom, includes 331 market units, 61 units of social housing, and seismic upgrades. The development also entails revamping a church, and expanding its current programs and facilities to the surrounding community.
Nonetheless, there is some negative buzz surrounding this project. While the building will add more variety to the Vancouver architecture, many feel it is too large for the site and the neighborhood context. City officials, however, including Mayor Gregor Robertson, are still backing the tower, saying developments such as these are a beneficial addition to the community at large because they ensure improved housing affordability, community amenities and sustainability.
