What’s World’s Most Honest City?
Last year, people in Tokyo found and returned a record 3.67 billion yen to the police. That’s $32 million in lost cash, and adds up to Tokyo ranking as one of the world’s most honest cities.
Roughly three-quarters of that money was actually returned to the rightful owners. Keys, eyeglasses and other lost items also landed in the lost and found department.
The honesty factor reflects the Japanese people’s devotion to cash, and to returning things that don’t belong to them. It is part Japanese culture, and can also be credited to ethics education in schools.
Holding cash is common in Japan, and there’s a considerable amount of it in circulation, roughly 103 trillion yen. Yet, given the low crime rate, there’s virtually no fear of getting robbed.
