Voters Reject Stadium Tax for Kansas City Chiefs, Royals
Voters have rejected a proposal for sales tax that would help finance stadium renovations for the Kansas City Chiefs and the construction of a new stadium for the Royals.
In a shocking move, voters struck down the proposal by a 58%-42% margin that would have replaced three-eighths of a cent sales tax that has been paying for the maintenance of Truman Sports Complex, the home of Kauffman and Arrowhead Stadiums, with a similar tax that would have raised around $2 billion worth of public funds over 40 years.
Kansas City is known as a sports town, home to enthusiastic fans and celebrated sports teams with recent Super Bowl wins, and the city recently celebrated the debut of the $117 million, 11,500-capacity CPKC Stadium, the first of its kind to be purpose-built for a women’s professional sports team. Even amid threats by owners to leave the city if the initiative failed, voters soundly rejected the campaign.
