Top 10 Labor Day Travel Destinations

National  + Weekender  |

Labor Day signals the end of summer, and a time when kids head back to school and business typically gets back to business. In honor of the last big weekend of summer fun, Smarter Travel assembled a list of the top 10 best Labor Day destinations. Here are those worthy getaways to consider celebrating a final summer hurrah:

Salem, OR: Oregon’s often-overlooked capital is one of the best Labor Day destinations for its outdoor offerings and family activities. Labor Day weekend also brings the Oregon State Fair to town.

Stowe, VT: Typically known for its fall foliage and winter sports, Stowe is one of the best Labor Day destinations because you’ll beat the crowds and enjoy ideal weather – whether it’s for a hike to a swimming hole or a mountain biking and brewery tour.

Santa Barbara, CA: A perfect mix of city and beach – from State Street’s shops, cafes and galleries to beach volleyball on East Beach.

Provincetown, MA: A 90-minute commuter ferry from downtown Boston. Enjoy seafood and the town’s famous White Party.

Hilton Head, SC (pictured): Fewer crowds and better beach weather to enjoy Folly Beach or Coligny Beach by day, followed by live music at the Hilton Head Distillery or the famed Chicagoan comedy troupe, Second City.

Saratoga Springs, NY: Catch the last horse races of the season at Saratoga Racecourse, and round out the weekend at the nearby Polo Club for a polo match. Or, spend time outdoors at Saratoga Spa State Park, relax in the historic bathhouse, Roosevelt Baths and Spa, or attend the Final Stretch Music Festival.

Prince Edward Island, Canada: The remote island is a 75-minute mini cruise from Caribou, Nova Scotia, and has views, hikes and beaches. Fall Flavours Festival offers a deep-sea fishing expedition, mussel and lobster shore boil, and a Charlottetown food tour.

Kelleys Island, OH: A ferry-served, 1.5-hour drive from Cleveland. Budget-minded travelers will enjoy a hike through the island’s state park, as well as renting bikes, kayaks or a boat to enjoy some time on the water.

Moab, UT: Visit Arches National Park in Moab, rent mountain bikes or four-wheelers to explore the park on your own. Or explore the quirky town of Moab’s brew pubs and swimming holes. Airport in Grand Junction, CO is about a 90-minute drive.

Washington, DC: Visit museums and monuments. City events for the weekend include the free Labor Day Capitol Concert, which kicks off the Kennedy Center’s performing arts season. Enjoy the still-warm weather on the Potomac River by renting a boat or kayak from one of the many rental centers in Georgetown.
