TJX Cos. Continues Paying Employees in Closed Stores in Puerto Rico
Framingham-based TJX Cos., the owner of Marshalls, TJ Maxx, and HomeGoods chains, has continued to pay its employees in Puerto Rico despite its stores being closed for six weeks following Hurricane Maria’s powerful and detrimental effects.
The company has 29 stores on the island, and a TJX spokesperson Erika Tower said, “We believe it is the right thing for us to do under these circumstances.”
The widespread devastation has left about 70% of Puerto Rico still without power. Until power is restored, businesses won’t open, leaving thousands of people claiming unemployment benefits.
Along with unemployment checks, other efforts are being enacted to get people back to work. For those who left Puerto Rico for Florida to seek safety, there was a job fair at the Orange County Convention Center this past week to employ those who are jobless. Representatives from more than 20 restaurants, cruise lines and hotels attended the event.
