The Home of the Future Will Know You on Sight

National  + Weekender  |

Nest Labs is adding Google’s facial recognition technology to a high-resolution home-security camera — bringing the “smart” apartment of the future a little closer to today.

The Nest Cam IQ is the first piece of hardware from Nest to draw on technologies like Google’s widely used photo app, which can recognize human faces. Nest can use Google’s software because both are owned by the same parent company, Alphabet Inc.

The camera could link a system that sets preferences, like lighting and temperature, based on who it recognizes in the home. The new camera will ship in late June for about $300, plus $10 a month for a plan including facial recongition.
