Starwood Retail Introduces Pop-Up Contest Winners

National  + Weekender  |

Four entrepreneurs will have the chance to test their retail concepts during the critical holiday shopping season at three Starwood Retail Partners centers as part of its “The Challenge: Battle of the Pop-Up” contest. The winners were awarded rent-free space, use of existing fixtures and free utilities for six months, beginning in November.

Starwood Retail Partners’ Catherine Loy says, “We are so excited for these entrepreneurs, and for our properties, as we help to develop the retailers of tomorrow.”

The Challenge: Battle of the Pop-Up began earlier this summer when entrants submitted applications. Winners were selected based on business strategy, concept creativity, and likelihood of profitability, among other criteria. They were required to obtain a business license by November 1, 2017, and be prepared to operate their business during mall hours from November 1, 2017, through April 30, 2018.

The winners included:

  1. Gateway Mall in Lincoln, NB: h.flynn, custom apparel and accessories for girls and women of all ages and sizes from entrepreneur Hayley Stamper
  2. Gateway Mall in Lincoln, NB: Feya Candle Company, offering scented soy candles from entrepreneur Sarah Mullins
  3. Great Northern Mall in North Olmsted, OH: NoBasis, which offers customizable black hoodies and T-shirts printed with humorous, tongue-in-cheek text including “Currently Procrastinating,” “Sorry I’m Late I Was Taking Selfies,” novelty items and athleisure wear from entrepreneur Althea Young
  4. Stony Point Fashion Park in Richmond, VA: MediaNoche, a haberdashery, artist collective and gift emporium from entrepreneur Jill Hammer
