Sites Reservoir Project Fast-Tracked Through New Streamlining Law
The $4-billion Sites Reservoir project in the Sacramento Valley will be California’s first infrastructure project to be accelerated under the CEQA streamlining law enacted this past summer. The action announced by Gov. Gavin Newsom occurred a week after the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and Sites Project Authority finalized the Environmental Impact Review and Environmental Impact Statement for the project, which would create the second-largest off-stream reservoir in the nation.
“We’re cutting red tape to build more faster,” said Newsom. “These are projects that will address our state’s biggest challenges faster, and the Sites Reservoir is fully representative of that goal.”
Located 81 miles northwest of Sacramento, Sites Reservoir would store water diverted from the Sacramento River, after all other water rights and regulatory requirements are met. Water would be released to beneficiaries throughout the state primarily during drier periods when it is needed.
