Newsom Signs Bills to Streamline CEQA Review for Infrastructure Projects

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law a slate of bills to accelerate approval and construction of infrastructure projects across California. First proposed by Newsom in May, the package enables an expedited judicial review process for projects, accelerates permitting and streamlines the procedures around California Environmental Quality Act document retention and review.

“For decades, infrastructure projects critical to our future have stalled because of a pervasive mindset of ‘no,’” said Newsom. “With this legislation, California is saying ‘yes’ to building the clean energy, safe drinking water and transportation projects we need to deliver on our world-leading climate action.”

The legislation represents a push to take full advantage of an unprecedented $180 billion in state, local and federal infrastructure funds over the next 10 years. However, the Sacramento Business Journal reported that the controversial Delta Conveyance project, which Newsom championed, was eliminated from the infrastructure projects that would be fast-tracked under the reforms.
