Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell Unveils Plans to Activate Downtown by allowing commercial real estate developers more freedom when building projects

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell Unveils Plans to Activate Downtown

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell has unveiled details of his Downtown Activation Plan, that’s been in the works since earlier this year, reported the Puget Sound Business Journal. City officials call these bold, immediate and long-term actions necessary, along with visionary aspirations requiring “Space Needle thinking.”

The first part of the mayor’s plan involves a rezone to allow taller towers in some areas, increasing the maximum heights from 170 feet to 440 feet and offering height bonuses of 20 feet to projects with educational and childcare facilities.

He also proposes expanding floor-area ratios in Belltown to boost hotel development. Additionally, plans call to extend master-use permits to six years, giving commercial real estate developers more time to start projects.

Harrell also wants to build recovery and crisis centers, a state-of-the-art downtown arts, culture and entertainment district with a year-round sports and recreation facility. Plans also call for making Westlake Park a “world-class” plaza with interactive art and community programming.
