Ready, Set, Go: Waymo Tests Driverless Cars in CA
Waymo, the self-driving unit of Alphabet (Google’s parent company), has received the green light from California to test its autonomous vehicles in the Golden State.
With the permit, Waymo can test its cars in both the day and night on city streets, rural roads, and highways with posted speed limits of up to 65 mph. Waymo joins 60 other companies with 300 vehicles currently registered with the DMV that are testing in the state, including vehicles from Uber and General Motors.
The company is permitted to test its fleet in Los Altos, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, and Los Altos Hills. These are all areas that the company is familiar with because it’s the location of Google’s headquarters and Alphabet’s campus.
Although Waymo is nearing its launch of autonomous taxis in Phoenix, these cars will not offer rides to the public just yet.
