Mercedes Driving into the AV Pool
If you find you’re tired of talkative taxi drivers, Mercedes could have a cure.
Daimler, which is the parent company of the Mercedes auto brand, is partnering with auto parts supplier Bosch to develop software for a self-driving taxi service. The goal is to develop “autonomous software” before 2025. Then, the software will be used/tested in Mercedes vehicles for a couple of years, with the ultimate goal being a self-driving platform for a taxi service.
Mercedes is one of the more recent automakers to dip its toe (wheel?) into the autonomous vehicle pool. Uber continues testing its self-driving concept in some U.S. cities.
Additionally, Google’s self-driving Waymo company partnered with Fiat Chrysler on self-driving cars by the end of 2017, while BMW teamed up with Intel and Mobileye to release an AV by in 2021.
