Gensler Unveils Plans to Revamp Chicago’s Mag Mile

Proposed plans to reimagine Chicago’s famed but struggling Magnificent Mile include recentering the pedestrian experience to support tourism, drive revenue, and reinvigorate the retail and entertainment destination.

“Reimagining North Michigan Avenue” is a comprehensive report by real estate leaders Bob Wislow and Camille Julmy, in collaboration with Gensler Chicago, exploring innovative strategies for redevelopment. By broadening the sidewalks, Gensler sees a reimagining that centers the experience of pedestrians, offering places for relaxation, respite, and engagement. The focus is on enhancing the northern end of the avenue, between Chicago Avenue and Oak Street Beach, to create a world-class anchor for North Michigan Avenue.

“Michigan Avenue is a vital engine of commerce, tourism, and culture in Chicago, and it’s worth investing in its evolution to ensure it is an accessible, dynamic, vibrant part of our city for years to come,” said Benjy Ward, Design Principal at Gensler.

The report also suggests a fresh approach around Jane Byrne Park, with an improved path flow and creating connectivity and pull-through opportunities east of Michigan Avenue toward the Museum of Contemporary Art, reimaging the area as an arts district and restaurant row.
