Arriving at 609 Main at Texas: An Indoor Bicycle “Garage”

National  + Weekender  |

Hines’ 609 Main at Texas, the one million-square-foot office tower in downtown Houston, introduced a new parking amenity to its tenants. However, rather than providing space for four-wheel motor vehicles, the space is an indoor “parking lot” — for bicycles.

Called the Bike Vault, the secured area is accessible directly from the building’s garage, and is available for tenants through a building access badge. There is enough space to park up to 32 bicycles, and the amenity includes changing facilities, storage lockers, bike repair stations, free refreshments and towel service.

The Bike Vault officially opened on May 17, 2019, at the start of the Houston 2019 Bike to Work Day. This event, in turn, is part of Bike Month, during which the United States honors the bicycle as a mode of transportation, a way to get to work, or to explore towns and cities.

“As our tenants continue to look to alternative forms of transportation, combined with the initiatives of groups such as BikeHouston to provide more access to high quality bike lanes and trails, we are excited to provide an improved experience for these riders at the most amenity-rich, technologically advanced building in Texas,” said Hines Managing Director Philip Croker.

Adjacent to the Bike Vault is a Parcel Pending location, where personal packages can be delivered to secured lockers in the building. The space includes refrigerated lockers for food and grocery deliveries.

609 Main at Texas is 86% occupied, with tenants including EnVen Energy, Kirkland & Ellis LLP, Orrick, Hogan Lovells, McKinsey & Company, PNC, Russell Reynolds Associates, Royal Bank of Canada, White and Case LLP, Goldman Sachs and United Airlines. Several transactions are in progress which, when executed, will boost occupancy to 94%.
