In February 2017, General Electric turned San Diego into a “smart city,”by adding cameras and sensors to 3,200 street lights. Now, AT&T has dubbed Dallas, TX as one of the first branded AT&T Smart Cities, with help from the Dallas Innovation Alliance. After a year of partnerships and examination of technology solutions, “Dallas is now one of the first U.S. cities to have an active living laboratory to showcase smart cities technology.

What does being part of the living lab mean? According to AT&T, the living lab will test:

  • Intelligent LED street lights to help reduce carbon emissions.
  • Interactive digital waypoints, kiosks geared to help residents and visitors find their way around the city.
  • Environmental sensors, which measures all kinds of atmospheric data including pollutants, humidity, allergen levels and temperature.

Dallas is one of eight “spotlight cities” testing the smart technology. Others include Atlanta, Chapel Hill, NC, Chicago, Miami-Dade County (FL) and Montgomery County (MD).
