Airbnb to Launch $1M Fund for World’s Most Unique Home Ideas

National  + Weekender  |

Airbnb is on the hunt for the world’s most “out there” home ideas, and has launched a $1-million fund to make them a reality.

The fund is the company’s first-ever $1 million program designed to find and finance the most unusual and unconventional livable places across the globe.

As part of the fund, 10 recipients will be selected by an expert panel of design and style innovators, including Tony- and Grammy- award-winning actor Billy Porter, Airbnb Superhost Kristie Wolfe of the renowned Big Idaho Potato Hotel, and global architecture firm MVRDV.

Beginning March 10, designers can submit proposals at Airbnb.com/uniquefund. Submissions will be scored against criteria that includes creativity, feasibility, sustainability and social good.

“The only thing better than pushing the boundaries of style is empowering others to do the same,” said Porter. “I’m thrilled to join Airbnb in this global search for the most outrageous, spectacular home ideas ever. I can’t wait to see these concepts developed by design lovers from around the world firsthand.”

According to Airbnb, searches for unique spaces like shepherds huts, windmills and tiny houses have increased by around 70% over last year on the website.

Some of the most popular listings of all time on the site include domes, RVs, treehouses, and yurts across the globe.

Submissions are open until 11:59 p.m. on April 15, 2020. The 10 winners will be selected by the panel mentioned above by May 15, 2020.
