A Living Space in the Great Outdoors

National  + Weekender  |

Once upon a time, typical patio or outdoor seating consisted mainly of uncomfortable folding chairs, redwood picnic tables and crates to hold drinks and food. These days, however, backyard and patio space are more outdoor oasis; an extension of a home’s living space. And Zillow, the online housing sale and rental marketplace, indicated that design styles are geared toward creating outdoor spaces that are at least as comfortable as indoor ones.

“The lines have been blurred between what’s indoor-only and what you can use outside, which means it’s never been easier to create an outdoor space that’s cohesive with your indoor design,” said Kerrie Kelly, Zillow’s Design Expert and founder of Kerrie Kelly Design Lab.

On that same topic, Zillow’s 2019 top five outdoor living trends include:

Mixed Materials. Chandeliers, soft rugs and floor cushions are considered appropriate for outdoors, leading to new fabric options such as outdoor-safe velvet, leather and chenille.

Minimalism. Lounge chairs, loveseats and bistro tables are becoming more available in lightweight, powder-coated aluminum, while Scandinavian minimalist design is considered the “in” among outdoor living spaces.

Outside Heat. Fire pits, outdoor fireplaces and outdoor kitchens are popular, with a focus on “indoor cozy.” Zillow research has found that home listings mentioning outdoor kitchens and fireplaces sold for significantly more than expected.

Color Pops. Bold color splashes are brightening up neutral furnishings. Bright oranges, reds, yellows and pinks are hot color trends.

Green Focus. Living walls both make a design statement and reduce carbon footprints, while solar-powered LED accent lights provide illumination without complex wiring. Additionally, eco-conscious landscaping, outdoor furnishings and fixtures are also gaining traction.
