Wu Refiles Property Tax Legislation; Bill Would Raise Cap on Commercial Landlords
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu on Monday introduced new legislation to limit residential property tax increases and avoid budget by raising the cap on commercial property tax increases for three years. A previous attempt at enacting a temporary tax hike on commercial landlords died in the Massachusetts Senate last month.
According to Wu’s office, residents receiving their Fiscal Year 2025 third-quarter property tax bills saw the biggest increase in their share of the property tax levy since 2007, while commercial taxpayers saw a significant drop. “I urge legislators and all stakeholders that held up the passage of our negotiated compromise to look carefully at the serious impact on Boston residents and join us in delivering the balanced relief our community needs,” Wu said in a statement.
The residential tax relief package now goes to the Boston City Council for approval before heading to the State House for legislative consideration.
