Time Flies in NY’s Retro 1960’s TWA Lounge

National  + Weekender  |

New York’s JFK International Airport is paying homage to its once renowned TWA center as MCR redevelops and restores the prestigious building into a retro hotel. Spanning 200,000 square feet, the TWA building will be the largest hotel lobby in the world, and feature eight restaurants and six bars.

While the 1960’s were the pinnacle of the Jet Age, the newly designed hotel won’t open until 2019. However, it will bring back the feeling of elegance and allure that the retired airline, owned by Howard Hughes, provided from 1930 to 2001.

With its signature red color scheme and futurist design by Eero Saarinen, the original flight center’s contoured exterior complemented its vast and ahead of its time interior.

CEO and Managing Partner of MCR and Morse Development, Tyler Morse, says, “We’re restoring Saarinen’s Flight Center to its original splendor.” The interior is designed by Lubrano Ciavarra Architects.
