YWCA Reopens in Downtown Seattle Building After $63M Revamp
The YWCA of Seattle and King and Snohomish counties recently reopened its historic mixed-use building in downtown Seattle following a $63 million renovation. A ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrated the reopening of the nine-story, 108,000-square-foot building, which closed for renovation in July 2023.
The nonprofit has owned and operated the building located at 1118 Fifth Ave. since it was completed in 1914, reported the Puget Sound Business Journal. Funding sources for the renovation included the Washington State Financing Commission, Washington State Department of Commerce low-income tax credits, the City of Seattle Office of Housing, and other private and public partners.
JH Brawner was the general contractor on the historic property’s rehabilitation, which included renovating the top five floors of the existing structure and constructing 114 units of permanent affordable housing. All major systems were replaced, and the first two floors were redesigned while the historic exterior and interior elements of the building were preserved.
