Yankee Stadium Opens as Mass Vaccination Site

Friday was opening day at Yankee Stadium, not for an early start to baseball season but to provide a mass COVID-19 vaccination site. Open to eligible Bronx residents, the site was established through a partnership between New York State, New York City, the New York Yankees, SOMOS Community Care and the New York National Guard. Some 15,000 appointments will be available during the facility’s first week.

Yankee Stadium joins Citi Field in Queens and other Major League Baseball stadiums nationwide as mass vaccination sites, although the Citi Field site’s opening was postponed. The Bronx has had the highest COVID-19 positivity rate among the five boroughs for the past several weeks.

In a statement, the Yankees organization said, “The New York Yankees recognize the devastating effect COVID-19 has had on our borough, and it is our privilege to have Yankee Stadium as a host site for providing vaccines to Bronx residents.”
