Wu Administration Seeks to Revive Local Interest in Faneuil Hall Marketplace
Although Faneuil Hall Marketplace has been one of Boston’s biggest tourist draws for decades, city officials want to revive waning local interest, reported the Boston Business Journal. The city is meeting with a group of advisers and major neighboring property owners to gauge what the coming years could look like for the downtown marketplace.
“For too long, Faneuil Hall Marketplace has felt like the place where you take people one time or the place that tourists go and they’re investing a significant amount in our local economy by how much they’re paying for that clam chowder or baked beans or whatever it is,” Mayor Michelle Wu said Monday. “But we can embrace that history, draw on all that’s occurred here that’s unlike anywhere else in the world, make sure that it’s commercially successful and [reflects] Boston in a much more authentic way.”
The Wu administration is working with a six-person advisory board, mostly from other cities, to hear recommendations. Nearby building owners were also present at an event Monday, including representatives from Tishman Speyer, Synergy and Chiofaro Co.
