WTC Arts Center Takes a Prize

A place for theater, dance, music and film now planned at the World Trade Center won a Progressive Architecture Award, one of 12 given by Architect Magazine at the 64th Progressive Architecture Awards.

The Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center is scheduled to open in 2020, at a development cost of $243 million. The building will have 90,000 square feet of space, and can be arranged and re-arranged into different configurations — from a movie theater with 99 seats, to an opera house seating 1,200.

The planned building is wrapped in sheets of marble so thin that light shines through. By day, sunlight glows through the walls. “By night, this monolith dematerializes: silhouettes of human movement and theatrical configurations animate the glowing enclosure,” according to REX architects.
