Work Underway on $100M Conroe Steel Plant

Once steelmaker Hertha gets its Conroe plant up and running, it’s expected to produce 30 tons of steel and iron per day. The company developed technology to make steel and iron in a single step using domestic feedstock. The process is cheaper and creates fewer emissions than conventional steelmaking.

Specifically, Hertha says its single-step blast furnace can reduce iron and steel production costs by 25% compared with conventional blast furnaces.

It’s expected to come online late next year with magnet-grade, high-purity iron production beginning in early 2028. By 2030, the company expects to be meeting roughly 25% of U.S. demand for high-purity iron.

CV Engineering is Hertha’s engineering, procurement and construction partner for Chalyx, the name of the plant.

Funding for the plant included a $65 million equity investment from the U.S. government. Kelly Loeffler, administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration, spoke at the groundbreaking, telling reporters that the SBA is focused on reshoring U.S. manufacturing. 94% of the world’s high-purity iron is produced in China.
