Women in Real Estate 2020: Better Housing Coalition’s Monique Johnson is Influential Affordable Housing Professional

As an African-American Chief Operating Officer of a $15-million affordable housing nonprofit, Monique Johnson stands out in the traditionally white-male-dominated field of real estate. In fact, she has devoted most of her adult life to the real estate industry, specifically working for organizations that serve lower-income or underserved populations. While her passion for community and those who live in it are evident in her words and actions, she is just as passionate about lifting up the potential of employees around her, and mentoring young women of color.

Johnson is Vice President and COO of the Better Housing Coalition (BHC), the Richmond region’s largest community development nonprofit with a mission of changing lives and transforming communities through high-quality, affordable housing. Monique is responsible for developing institution-wide processes, improving operating procedures and shaping a high-performance culture that enables the organization to continuously improve how associates serve the seniors and families that call BHC communities home.

Johnson’s leadership and influence have been valued both statewide and on a national level. In addition to an appointment to the Board of Housing and Community Development by the governor in 2010, she has served the Virginia Housing Alliance, the Virginia Impact Investment Fund, and the national Urban Land Institute Home Attainability Committee. She currently serves on the University of Virginia Richmond Ridley Scholarship Board, the Virginia Small Business Financing Authority Board and other statewide committees designed to strengthen the community development infrastructure.

These are just a few of the reasons we chose Johnson as one of the 2020 Women in Real Estate Award winners. Connect Media’s Women in Real Estate Awards honor the achievements and inspirational stories of women who have reached respected positions of leadership and play key mentorship roles for others.
