Women in Real Estate 2019: DJM Capital Partners’ Becky Sullivan Built Career ‘From Inside Out’

DJM Capital Partners’ Becky Sullivan is among an elite group of women leaders in commercial real estate development who successfully built a career “from the inside out,” rising from an assistant to Chief Operating Officer at one of California’s most prominent real estate development firms. The San Jose-based development leader is equally at home in a hard hat or a business suit, and is alternately found in both.

Sullivan focuses her efforts on experiential and mixed-use retail at a time when many in the industry are moving away from bricks and mortar retail. Sullivan is responsible for managing all construction and development activities for more than two million square feet of DJM property under management. She has been with DJM for more than 14 years, and has overseen more than $500 million of development projects. From project commencement through completion, she directs all entitlements, government relations, architectural and land planning as well as construction.

These are just a few of the reasons we chose Sullivan as one of the 2019 Women in Real Estate Award winners. Connect Media’s Women in Real Estate Awards honor the achievements and inspirational stories of women who have reached respected positions of leadership and play key mentorship roles for others.

She was raised in a family construction business and witnessed first-hand, from a very young age, the importance of having a clear vision for a project and combining the talents of many different team members to see it through to completion. Having a family legacy in the CRE business has provided her with a unique perspective and depth of experience unlike many in the industry.

Sullivan is responsible for project budgeting and oversight, and for managing a large team of consultants across the spectrum of engineering, architecture, construction and design focused on re-creating an experience that cannot be replicated online or virtually. Project examples include Pacific City, a 191,000 square-foot, mixed-use development in Huntington Beach; Lido Marina Village, a boutique retail, restaurant and creative office development totaling 116,000 square feet in Newport Beach; and Bella Terra, a mixed-use open-air shopping, dining, entertainment and residential complex totaling more than one million square feet in Huntington Beach.

She is focused on expanding DJM’s use of technology to accelerate the deal cycle. The use of digital and mobile technology allows the developer to unlock the value of existing assets and increase the firm’s overall efficiency. By actively sharing and tracking data, Sullivan is able to make critical decisions in real time, thus improving the efficiency of the organization overall.
