WMU Sets Groundbreaking on Next Phase of Business Tech, Research Park
Western Michigan University (WMU) plans to begin development of Business Technology and Research Park 2 (BTR 2) in Q1 2019. The 55-acre parcel of land is located in Oshtemo Township, MI, west of Drake Road and east of U.S. 131.
WMU’s Bob Miller notes the BTR 2 complex will attract and incubate new businesses and establish university, regional business and community partnerships. It will support research, economic development and new student opportunities.
A $2.1-million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration will help pay for site infrastructure. The university envisions selling land to developers to build between seven and 10 new single tenant, as well as multi-tenant, buildings for high-tech companies.
The site is southwest of WMU’s main campus, and across the road from the larger Business and Technology Research Park 1 (BTR 1). BTR 1 is a 256-acre complex that’s now home to roughly 40 companies and more than 850 jobs.
