Wildlife Center to State: We Need a New Facility
The Texas State Aquarium Wildlife Center in Corpus Christi is the only wildlife rehab facility in the Lone Star State. However, the facility at 4230 Rincon Rd., has not received financial support from the state. The organization is asking the 86th Texas Legislature to appropriate at least $8 million to a new, and sturdier 25,000-square-foot facility, which will cost an estimated $22 million to build.
While injured wildlife from the state’s Coastal Bend region stream into the facility during big storms, the facility, itself, isn’t built to withstand hurricanes. Since 1989, the operations have been housed in a metal warehouse, on land leased from the Port of Christi. The lease expires in 2021.
The plan is to build the new wildlife center on land owned by the Texas State Aquarium.
