Whole Foods Opens First Delivery-Only Store

Whole Foods Market recently opened its first-ever permanent online-only store in Brooklyn’s Industry City. Parent company Amazon said in a blog posting that the new delivery-only retail model would allow Whole Foods “to serve even more customers and continue to meet the growing demand for grocery delivery.”

Although the operation might seem to represent a pivot amid the uptick in deliveries during the pandemic, Amazon said planning for the new store format began more than a year ago.

“The brand-new Industry City location will exclusively serve customers in the Brooklyn area,” according to Amazon. “Amazon and Whole Foods Market worked closely together to make this new online-only store a reality.”

Amazon said grocery delivery continues to be one of its fastest-growing businesses, with online grocery sales tripling year-over-year in the second quarter of 2020.
