What’s Next for Retail Following “Complex” 2025

2025 set trends in retail that will continue driving consumer behavior in 2026, Placer.ai says in a new white paper. Calling the preceding 11 months “another complex year,” the white paper reports, “Persistent economic headwinds and uncertainty surrounding tariffs intensified consumers’ focus on value, even as affluent shoppers continued to indulge in luxury brands and upscale dining experiences.”

However, there were other behavioral shifts in 2025 that extended beyond price sensitivity, according to the white paper, titled Retail Trends to Watch in 2026. For their part, retailers and their landlords continued to evolve, adopting strategies to address changes in demographics.

The white paper reports the ways in which online and offline retail are converging into a seamless ecosystem, the expansion of digitally native brands into physical stores, the shift of traditionally urban brands into suburbia, expansion into college markets and celebrity pop-ups as a means of reaching younger consumers, and other trends.
