What Apartment Renters REALLY Want
An understanding of what apartment renters want is the goal of any multifamily property owner and manager. That understanding is sharpened with the help of research, such as the numbers found in the National Multifamily Housing Council’s just-released Renter Preferences Report. The NMHC unveiled the survey’s results at its recent 2018 OpTech Conference & Exposition in Orlando, FL.
The report was conducted in partnership with Kingsley Associates. Among the findings were must-have apartment features such as soundproof walls, air conditioning and high-speed internet access. Also important for renters are sustainability initiatives, which can include recycling programs and swapping out fixtures and interior features for greener efficiencies.
What was interesting, especially given that “walkability” seems to be integrated with “apartment living,” was that 94% of survey respondents reported owning a car. Though there is an increase in renters wanting to live near public transportation, 71% indicated they would eschew a complex that didn’t offer parking, with 88% noting that secure resident parking is a must.
