Wexford Selected for Med Center Redevelopment

The Central Health Board of Managers selected Wexford Science & Technology LLC as master developer for the redevelopment of its University Medical Center Brackenridge in downtown Austin. The UMCB closed on the 14.3-acre site in May 2017.

The taxpayer-funded UMCB, which provides health care to Travis County residents who lack health insurance, will spend the next 15-25 years developing the land as a mixed-use project, with a medical research and service focus.

Though approval of a master developer means the project is moving forward, Central Health Board Member Clark Hiedrick said an approved plan for the redevelopment of the now-vacant Brackenridge Hospital at 601 E. 15th St. is still far off. Demolition of the current building on the site won’t begin for another six months to a year, with new construction scheduled to start approximately two to three years out.
