Westfield May Look to Block Carlsbad Center

Mall owner Westfield Corp., which owns the Westfield Carlsbad center and six others in San Diego County, is mulling over whether to try to block a proposed new retail development in Carlsbad.

At issue is the Caruso Affiliated proposal for a retail center near the Agua Hedionda Lagoon. Caruso is looking to build a retail-entertainment development, anchored by Nordstrom, on 26 acres of a 203-acre site in the area.

Westfield Carlsbad is in the process of a $300 million renovation that will turn it into an open-air center. Westfield would have 30 days to collect signatures for a referendum to block the city-approved Caruso project.
