Westchester Finally Meets Fair Housing Requirements
Westchester County has finally fulfilled a promise to permit the construction of 750 units of government subsidized affordable housing. By the end of 2016, the County had approved permits to build 790 units, according to the Office of County Executive Rob Astorino.
The permit ends years of legal battles with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). HUD had claimed the difficulty affordable housing developers faced in getting a permit in Westchester amounted to a violation of the federal Fair Housing Act, which makes it illegal to discriminate against protected groups of people in housing.
